Tokyo Auto Show Home Run Concept Vehicles
Five Japanese carmakers put a charge in their home-market show with head-turning concept vehicles.

Mazda RX-Vision

Vehicle type: Coupe

Engine: Next-generation 16X rotary

Who designed it: Mazda design chief Ikuo Maeda

What's cool: An absurdly low and long hood, enabled by the compact packaging of the rotary engine, and LED accents that hearken back to the old RX-7's pop-up headlamps

Will it be built: It all depends on the engine. Engineers must solve problems with the rotary's fuel economy, emissions and reliability.

Show reaction: Supercar buzz. Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer posted pictures of the RX-Vision on Twitter, calling it his car of the show.

Mitsubishi eX

Vehicle type: Compact EV crossover

Engine: Twin electric motors, 45 KwH battery pack

Who designed it: Tsunehiro Kunimoto, general manager of design

What's cool: Automated features such as driverless valet parking, camera feeds in place of mirrors and a 248-mile range on a full charge

Will it be built: Not as such. Mitsubishi plans to add a third crossover to its range, slotted between the Outlander and Outlander Sport, and the design of the eX will inform one of the smaller two. Plus, all future Mitsubishi crossovers will have PHEV or EV variants.

Show reaction: Subdued. Neither electrified vehicles nor compact crossovers stand out today.

Subaru Impreza 5-Door Concept

Vehicle type: Compact five-door

Engine: 2.0-liter four-cylinder Boxer with 145 hp

Who designed it: Atsushi Kochi

What's cool: Concept shows new design language, "Dynamic & Solid" Subaru, with softer, sleeker and more rounded proportions

Will it be built: Yes, starting mid-2016 in Subaru's Indiana factory

Show reaction: Styling turned heads; kudos for sleeker look

Nissan IDS Concept

Vehicle type: Four-door hatchback

Powertrain: 60-kilowatt-hour battery

What's cool: Nissan is pondering what electric vehicles will look like and how they will perform in the near future. The IDS is an autonomous-drive vehicle that uses cool blue interior lights to stimulate concentration and a changing LED body line that shows pedestrians the car's intentions.

Will it be built: The concept signals what the next-gen Leaf could look like.

Show reaction: Nissan has managed to re-excite people about an EV.

Lexus LF-FC

Vehicle type: Full-size sedan concept

Engine: Hydrogen fuel cell

Who designed it: Takeaki Kato, project general manager

What's cool: Sleek styling softens current Lexus look, awd powertrain with two hydrogen tanks and trunk-mounted fuel cell stack

Will it be built: The car previews the next-generation LS, so yes, but with more traditional gasoline and hybrid powertrains. A fuel cell version is being considered.

Show reaction: Universally praised as one of the show highlights
