But out of all the 500 examples of the coupe ever built, one will surely stand out, especially when viewed from the rear, thanks to the work of the famed Italian coachbuilder Zagato.
Called the Alfa Romeo 8C DoppiaCoda Zagato, this modern interpretation of the classic 8C was unveiled at Lake Como in Italy during the Villa d'Este. It's a one-off concept car commissioned by one wealthy Italian collector, though its pricing wasn't mentioned. However, there's more to the 8C DoppiaCoda Zagato than just a reworked design, with a callback to Zagato's recent work with the AGTZ Twin Tail.
A Combination Of Two Interesting Rear Designs
The name DoppiaCoda wasn't just a play on two Italian words. It refers to the fusion of Kamm-tail (Coda Tronca), also known as the Kammback, which is a truncated tail design for aerodynamic benefit, a brainchild of German designer Wunibald Kamm. However, instead of having a straight vertical rear, Zagato employed a curvy, softer finish, which forms a ring with a rounded tail.
Most of the donor 8C Competizione's body has been reworked beyond the aforementioned tail. Of course, the 8C DoppiaCoda Zagato won't be a Zagato without the signature double bubble roof, which interestingly covers most of the rear windshield. Hopefully, there's a rear camera installed for the driver, since we think there isn't a view of the back from the cockpit with this design execution.
"With the AGTZ Twin Tail project in 2024, we explored the concept of a single car convertible between short-tail and long-tail configurations, effectively offering two cars in one. With the 8C DoppiaCoda, instead, we created a true fusion of round and truncated tails into a single body style - one that still preserves the functional benefits of both."
- Andrea Michele Zagato, President of Zagato
Not The First Coachbuilt 8C Competizione
This isn't the first time that the 8C Competizione has been worked on by coachbuilders. Carrozzeria Touring introduced the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring, which was based on the Italian sports coupe. Zagato also worked with the 8C Competizione in 2010, introducing the Alfa Romeo TZ3 Corsa - also at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este - made for a German collector, Martin Kapp.
In fact, Zagato's relationship with Alfa Romeo dates back to 1921 when it made the Tipo G1. The original 8C was also bodied by the company, with all the 195 units ever made, including those that competed in races and versions for Scuderia Ferrari, made by Zagato.
