VW diesel fix approved for 9 million cars in Europe
Volkswagen announced today that the company received approval from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority for a fix for all vehicles with EA189 four-cylinder diesel engines.

The company had previously been approved to implement a fix for the 2.0-liter version of the engine in the Passat, CC, and Eos only. This new approval allows the company to also fix 1.2- and 1.6-liter versions, as well as other 2.0-liter cars. This applies to any VW Group vehicle with one of these engines.

This is a massive batch of vehicles, too. A spokesperson told Automotive News that the approved fixes cover 9 million cars. Automotive News also reports that all engines will require software updates, and the 1.6-liter engine will also need a piece of mesh installed in the intake. This mesh insert is called a "flow transformer" and allows the engine computer to take a more accurate measurement of incoming air. The longest the repair should take is about an hour.

Volkswagen stated that it will notify owners that a fix is now available and can set an appointment at the owner's preferred "partner workshop" to have the fix installed. The company said that the fix will not cost the owners anything. Unfortunately, this repair has only been approved in Europe, and a fix still has yet to be finalized for owners in the US and Canada.
