That is why Edmunds gives out its Best Retained Value Awards every year to the manufacturers and models that hold value best over a five-year period. For 2016 Toyota was ranked the best non-luxury brand and Acura was ranked as the best luxury brand.

Toyota as a whole has a projected 53.8% residual value after five years and Acura comes in at 47.6%. Honorable mentions were given to Lexus and Porsche in the luxury segment, and Subaru and GMC in the non-luxury segment. The awards are also broken down by vehicle segment. The cars with the best reliability (by class) were the Honda Fit, Subaru WRX, Toyota Camry, Toyota Camry, Lexus IS 350, BMW M3, Porsche Panamera, Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Corvette and Porsche 911. The best SUVs were the Honda CR-V, Toyota Highlander, GMC Acadia, Lexus NX 200t, Lexus GX 460, Mercedes G-Class, Jeep Wrangler, and GMC Yukon. The best trucks were the Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra, and RAM 2500.

Finally, the vans with the highest anticipated private party residual values after five years were the Honda Odyssey, Mercedes-Benz Metris, and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. We were very surprised to see a few sports cars on the list like the BMW M3 and the Subaru WRX, given that they weren't in categories that were exclusively for sports cars (like the Corvette and 911). We were equally unsurprised that the list was dominated by cars from Toyota and Honda, which both have amazing reputations for building cars that hold value extremely well.
