Mazda's Stunning Turbo-Rotary Four-Door Concept Previews Vision Of The Future
Mazda is determined to bring the rotary engine back in a production car, but not quite the way you remember it. The Japanese automaker wowed everyone two years ago at the Japan Mobility Show when it revealed the Iconic SP Concept with a range-extender rotary powertrain, and now it's about to do the same thing yet again.

At the 2025 JMS, Mazda pulled the wraps off its new Vision X-Coupe, a four-door sports coupe that further evolves the automaker's Kodo "soul of motion" design language."

Unlike the Iconic SP, which used a rotary engine to keep the batteries charged, the Vision X-Coupe is a more traditional plug-in hybrid that can use the electric motor or its two-rotor turbocharged engine to drive the wheels. Total output is 503 horsepower, and Mazda says the car will drive up to 800 kilometers (497 miles) between gasoline and electricity, or 160 km (103 miles) on the latter alone.

Those numbers were likely calculated on the WLTC testing cycle, not the EPA one. But the fact they have these specific stats has us wondering if Mazda is a bit more serious this time around.

It may be called a coupe, but the Vision X-Coupe is actually a sleek four-door that stretches 198.8 inches in length with a 121.2-inch wheelbase. That's significantly longer than the last-generation Mazda6, which measured 192.7 inches with a 111.4-inch wheelbase. Those proportions give the Vision X-Coupe a stunning stance, as does the substantial width of 78.5 inches (the Mazda6 was 72.4 inches).

This may be Mazda's most luxurious vehicle yet, concept or otherwise. It has a gorgeous beige/green cabin that features a retro-futuristic cockpit blending old and new design cues.

The gauges look old school, but the touchscreen looks large and modern. Though it doesn't have rear-opening doors like an RX-8, the concept looks like it has more space in the back seat.

Mazda also revealed the Vision X-Compact, a smaller hatchback model that is "designed to deepen the bond between people and cars through the fusion of a human sensory digital model and empathetic AI." The company says this car previews a vision of the future of smart mobility, where people and cars have a more emotional connection with each other.

Unlike the Vision X-Coupe, Mazda has no powertrain details about this concept. It's unclear if it uses a rotary like the Vision X-Coupe, an all-electric powertrain, or a gasoline engine.

Though we have no idea what's under the hood, Mazda did share some external measurements, so we know the Vision X-Compact measures 150.55 inches long with a 99-inch wheelbase. For reference, the last-generation Mazda2 was 155.5 inches long and has a 98-inch wheelbase. Inside, the concept is simple with a body-color dashboard that is devoid of screens; instead, there is a smartphone holder near the gauge cluster. It's a cool, retro-looking interior that we'd love to see inspire a future Mazda interior.
