Portal axles add significant ground clearance to a vehicle as well as enabling chunky off-road tires to be fitted, and were made famous in recent years with Mercedes-Benz's G-Class 4x4 Squared models. They are essentially reduction gears, or portal gears as they're often referred to, which move the axle centerline above the wheel hub center, usually by several inches. Another benefit of reduction gears is less torque load on key drivetrain components like the driveshafts and CV joints.
Ineos Turns To LeTech
The portal axles for the Grenadier were developed in partnership with LeTech, a German off-road specialist that initially offered accessories for the G-Class and recently expanded to include the Grenadier. The portal axles increase the ground clearance from a standard 10.4 inches to a massive 17.7 inches.
Ineos fans will be able to order the portal axles via LeTech, which is offering them on complete vehicles based on Ineos's Trialmaster versions of the Grenadier SUV and Grenadier Quartermaster pickup truck. The Trialmaster is the rugged trim for Ineos and includes three locking differentials as standard.
2025 Ineos Grenadier and Quartermaster First Drive Review: Throwback Style For Off-Road Adventures
Old-school on the outside, unique styling on the inside, and all the capability you could want for off-road adventures.
LeTech's versions – known as the Grenadier Trialmaster x LeTech and Grenadier Quartermaster Trialmaster x LeTech – are priced from €170,000 (approximately $199,000), which is definitely expensive. Thus far, there isn't an announcement for the US market, where the Grenadier starts at $78,900 and the Grenadier Quartermaster at $92,900.
LeTech includes many more modifications than just the portal axles to justify the steep price tag. Also included is a Reiger Performance suspension setup consisting of new dampers and coil springs, plus 18-inch wheels with beadlock rings and 37-inch BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain tires. There are also upgraded brakes and a spare wheel holder complete with additional storage systems. Several other accessories are included, such as a winch bracket, a roof rack with auxiliary lights, and running boards.
Ineos May Have More For Grenadier Fans
Ineos was born out of a mission to deliver relatively affordable, no-nonsense off-roaders akin to the original Land Rover Defender, aimed at both commercial buyers and enthusiasts. The company started off with the Grenadier and soon added the Grenadier Quartermaster.
While more vehicles are on the drawing board – like the smaller Fusilier electric SUV – the steep cost of development means Ineos plans to continue developing new versions of its existing vehicles. A taste of these additional versions was previewed during the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK, where the Grenadier with portal axles was first shown.
Other versions shown included a Grenadier Quartermaster with a shortened bed, a Grenadier Safari with eight seats split over three rows, a version with a V8 engine, and a stripped-out rally-inspired version. Given the market launch of the Grenadier with portal axles, it's possible some of these other Grenadier variants will also receive the production green light.
