Good Old Toyota FJ Keeps the Retro Vibes, but What an Engine It's Got Now!
The Toyota FJ is anything but underpowered now. The model has just received a Chevrolet V8 engine and contemporary features, courtesy of ECD Auto Design, but kept its so-much-loved retro styling that it came with to the world. The oldie but goldie FJ has Bluetooth connectivity and a reverse camera, leather upholstery, and upgraded mechanics.

The restoration expert has just upgraded the Toyota FJ, the vehicle that comes with the aura of an uncompromising off-roader. The model retains its boxy shape as well as everything Toyota put in it to build the vehicle that it has always been: a legend in terms of durability and ruggedness.

ECD Design builds one-offs equipped with bespoke elements according to the customers' preferences. The Florida-based team is counting on the vehicle to be visually stunning and sport exceptional performance.

Leaving uniqueness aside, all vehicles will have the same basic configuration. They will be powered by a Chevrolet-sourced 6.2-liter V8 engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, but customers can also go for a manual if that is what they want.

The team upgraded the fueling system with braided stainless steel PTFE lines and the high-performance aluminum cooling system. An ECD full stainless steel exhaust system replaced the old one.

The restomod experts also came up with heavy-duty axles and an upgraded suspension, while switching to full disc brakes for enhanced stopping power.

The Toyota FJ now rides on 16-inch wheels from ECD, wrapped in BF Goodrich all-terrain tires. The tailgate-mounted spare wheel, something common to many off-roaders with impressive capabilities, is not going anywhere. Tubular sidesteps make entry and exit easier.

ECD installed a brand-new slimline front bumper with integrated daytime running lights and classic grille and headlights surrounds. Customers can choose any OEM color in a gloss finish. They will have to choose one that they will also want on board the car because the dashboard will match the exterior color.

They will also get a Momo steering wheel and will sit in hand-stitched leather trim seats, available in various colors, while the custom center console will be black.

An ECD premium sound system with a Sony or Alpine head unit and four JL Audio speakers will be inside the cabin. Bluetooth compatibility, a reverse camera, and four USB charging ports will be part of the plan.

Starting this July, ECD opens the waiting list for those who want to go home with an FJ. The restomodded off-roader goes into production toward the end of the third quarter of 2024. First customers will receive their vehicles in the first quarter of 2025.

Using the world-class technology experience in converting classic off-roaders into innovative restomods for over a decade, ECD will manufacture the FJ on the same production line as the Defenders and Ranger Rover Classics.
