2017.5 Mazda6 Sedan Gets Mid-Year Equipment Updates
It’s not quite a 2018 model, but close.

Usually, automakers are pretty cut-and-dry when it comes to a vehicle's model year. Sometimes, however, enough changes are made along the way to warrant an odd half-year designation, which is exactly what Mazda has done with its current Mazda6 sedan. You won't be able to spot one of these half-year models just by looking at it, because there is nothing different to see. Inside, however, certain models will offer a bit more standard and optional tech.

Specifically, entry-level Sport models get a safety boost with standard blind-spot monitoring and cross traffic alert. Moving up the chain, mid-level Touring models get standard leather seats with heat in the front, as well as navigation. As far as options go, cars with the Touring Premium Package now get full leather seats with 8-way adjustability, versus 6-way leatherette seats offered previously. One thing Mazda6 buyers won't get is a price increase – the manufacturer says base prices for all models remain the same, despite the additional standard equipment. That's $21,945 for Sport and $24,195 for Touring models. The range-topping Mazda6 Grand Touring soldiers on unchanged, and starts at $30,695.

Whether or not a few equipment tweaks deserve a 2017.5 model year designation is debatable, especially when most other manufacturers are transitioning to 2018 model year vehicles already. It could indicate that Mazda has something more planned for its mid-size sedan next year, but there's also the question of timing. Both Honda and Toyota have unveiled new versions of the Accord and Camry – direct competitors to the Mazda6 which also happen to have a host of safety systems as standard equipment. Could this announcement from Mazda about similar standard-issue safety tech just be a coincidence?

There's also the rumor that Mazda could be moving its sedan to a rear-wheel drive platform for a future generation. As for when that could take place, nobody knows. In the meantime, look for updated 2017.5 Mazda6 sedans to hit showrooms later this month.
